An Australian teenager is suing Sydney’s Daily Telegraph, The Daily Mail and the Australian Radio Network for defamation because he claimed the networks provided wide coverage of memes that used his picture last year.

BBC reports Ali Ziggi Mosslmani was attending a friend’s 18th birthday party when a photographer took a picture of him from the side showcasing Ziggi’s long mullet and posted it on Facebook.

The picture went viral and generated memes that Ziggi felt portrayed him as “hideously ugly” and subjected him to ridicule. People have photoshopped Ziggi’s profile on horses, some on mops and on even on bank notes.

During the preliminary hearing, District Court Judge Gibson dismissed claims that the pictures show Ziggi as ugly but said that “his haircut has been criticized as ridiculous.”

Gibson is quoted as saying, “This photograph needs to be seen in context with the six photoshopped pictures of the plaintiff showing him on Mount Rushmore, on a dollar bill, as “pin the tail on the donkey” and as a horse, none of which suggest physical ugliness on the part of the plaintiff, let alone “hideous” ugliness.”

He added that the defence “seems to be designed to claim as many imputations as possible while simultaneously avoiding a defence of honest opinion or justification.”

Memes are generally meant to create laughter among internet users, but some memes have hurt people’s social life or careers. Taiwanese model Heidi Yeh whose plastic surgery memes went viral  claim that they ruined her career and her life.
