An Australian woman has been arrested for running illegal surrogacy services in Cambodia reports AU News.

Tammy Davis-Charles, a 49 year old nurse and fertility specialist was detained at Phnom Penh for acting as an “intermediary in surrogacy and for falsifying documents” according to Cambodia’s chief of the Anti-trafficking Office, Police Colonel Keo Thea.

The nurse was reported to have arranged more than 20 Cambodian women to act as surrogates for paying customers.

Cambodia recently announced its ban on surrogacy after seeing a rise in surrogacy agencies throughout the country due to bans in neighboring India and Thailand.

However, surrogacy services in Thailand are still permitted in certain conditions. Married couples of the opposite sex residing in Thailand can obtain the services of a surrogate with the help of agencies and lawyers specializing in surrogacy laws in Thailand.
