Australian Government to Provide Public Subsidy for HIV Medication

by Admin on March 27, 2018

In line with Australia’s goal to eradicate HIV transmission by 2020, Australia has become the first country in the world to subsidize the HIV medication, Pre-Exposure Prophyaxis to the public. Greg Hunt, Australia’s Health Minister says that the drug is “recommended for groups considered to be at high risk”, such as male homosexual couples.

The public subsidy will come under the Pharmaceuticals Benefits Scheme and the cost will be dramatically reduced from thousands of dollars to a monthly payment plan of $39.50. Hunt explains that each “averted HIV transmission” will save the average Australian taxpayer thousands of dollars in lifetime costs.

LGBT groups have praised the subsidy as it means affordable access to highly effective HIV prevention medication to people across Australia.
