The bill landmark proposal would affect 20,000
Lawmakers in Australia are proposing a new law that would confiscate passports of registered child sex offenders in a bid to combat the victimization of children overseas by pedophiles.
NPR reports, “The law would affect an estimated 20,000 registered offenders who have served their sentences but are still under supervision and must report to authorities.”
Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said that the new legislation would put Australia on the list of countries with the toughest crackdown on child sex tourism.
Australia is “determined to prevent the sexual exploitation of vulnerable young children overseas,” she added.
There have been several instances in which child sex offenders leave their home countries to settle in developing countries such as Thailand, the Philippines and Cambodia, where they continue to exploit children.
Perhaps the most shocking case of exploitation was brought upon by Richard Huckle, a 27 year old British national who was found guilty of exploiting more than 200 children across South East Asia. Huckle was convicted in the UK and was given 22 life sentences.
