TL Blog: An Australian man was detained by border police for overstaying his visa for a mere 90 minutes reports the Inquirer.

The man in question, 26-year-old Baxter Reid along with his girlfriend Heather Kancso arrived at the Canadian border 2 hours before his visa was set to expire. The couple was interrogated by the Canadian border police for 3 and a half hours after which they refused him entry and sent him back to the border, 1 and a half hours after his visa expired.

“For some reason, the Canadians kept them until 1:30 a.m. and then they refused them entry,” Reid’s father, Tom, said according to the report. “They returned them to the United States and by then they were an hour and a half over the visa, and [he] got locked up.”

Reid is currently being detained at Buffalo Federal Detention Center in New York and is scheduled to appear in court on May 10th, where he could be granted bail. His girlfriend has set up a GoFundMe page to raise funds for Reid’s legal expenses.

“This is going to make a criminal out of an innocent man,” Kancso wrote on the page. “This is a man who has no prior incidents with the law, not in the US or his native Australia.”
