Anticipated Child Sex Bill Gets First Reading in Malaysia

Measures include sections on child grooming and sexual communication with minors

A new law to protect children from sexual abuse was tabled for discussion on March 27th in Malaysia reports The Star.

The much-anticipated Sexual Offences against Children Bill 2017 has seven elements which include offences relating to child pornography, child grooming, and sexual assault.

The bill garnered 115 pledges from MPs of both political parties.

During the discussion, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Seri Azalina Othman urged all MPs to support the bill and stressed that stronger unity is needed to protect children and their future.

“So, to all the perpetrators out there, you can run but you cannot hide because we, all the MPs, will be united for this law. Those who do not support the bill, I define them as perverts,” she said.

Malaysia and other countries in South East Asia have seen a focus on traveling pedophiles that prey on children that hail from poorer socio-economic backgrounds. Most recently was Richard Huckle, a Britsh born pedophile who preyed in children in Southeast Asia.
