American Punished in Israel for Son’s Divorce Refusal

Court claims father is helping his son by letting him live lavishly in America

An American man has been barred from leaving Israel for more than a year after a rabbinical court found him guilty of aiding his son’s refusal to grant his wife a divorce.

Salon reports that the court claims the father is responsible for the son’s refusal because he is helping him live a life of luxury in the United States while leaving his estranged wife languishing back in Israel.

Under age-old Jewish law, a wife will be granted divorce only if she is granted approval from her husband. More recently, the Jewish court has imposed strict sanctions on recalcitrant husbands in order to help women from being forced to stay in unhappy marriages.

This is the first instance in which a father has been punished for his son’s actions.
