Alleged Torture Of Gay And Transgender People In Myanmar

The Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has issued a statement condemning the alleged torture of gay and transgender people by police in Myanmar the Bangkok Post reports.

On 7 July, approximately 20 plain clothed police officers and local administrators assaulted a group of gay and transgender people outside the Sedona Hotel, pushing, hitting, handcuffing them and pulling off their clothes in public before loading them on to a number of vehicles, the statement said.

The alleged abuse was then said to have become worse once the detainees were in custody. Detainees also claim they were questionned at length about their sex life.

Many were later released without charge.
