After Rigged ‘Election’, Cambodia on the Verge of Hereditary Dictatorship

Cambodia’s strongman prime minister Hun Sen and his thuggish Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) won last week’s blatantly rigged elections.

The landslide result was expected after Hun Sen dismantled the only viable challenging party in the country, the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), and instituted a widespread and brutal crackdown on any opposition to himself or his party, from silencing the press and intimidating voters to all but eliminating free speech.

Now, Hun Sen–who plans to stay in power for 1o more years (he’s already the longest-serving prime minister in the world)–is grooming his sons to take over the country in his place when he lays down the reigns.

To accomplish this new hereditary dictatorship, Hun Sen has practically destroyed every avenue for democratic resistance in the country.

On top of that, Hun Sen has more than once threatened war if he were to ever lose his grip on power.
