From Baiyoke Tower, the tallest building in Thailand, central Bangkok looks serene, even as floodwaters threaten the city from the very edges of the horizon. Despite the Bangkok floods, the BTS is running, the sun is shining, and in the city center life is very much “business as usual”. Even the districts dealing with more than a meter of flooding – especially Thonburi, clearly visible from the tower – looked deceptively calm.
The tourists we interviewed seemed surprised when we asked if they were concerned about flooding, even with the Chao Praya River’s flooded banks in plain view from the tower’s lofty height.
