The United States Attorney’s Office for Kansas has come under scrutiny after a court-appointed investigator found hundreds of phone and video recordings of communications between attorneys and their clients, inmates at a privately run prison facility in Leavenworth.
According to a report by The Daily Beast, the investigator’s report stated that almost 700 criminal defense lawyers are believed to have been recorded without their knowledge and approximately 227 phone call recordings and 30 videos of attorney-client meetings have been uncovered in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Kansas City.
The recordings were obtained from CoreCivic , the prison company that runs Leavenworth, and telecommunications company Securus Technologies.
The U.S Attorney’s office had been tapping conversations between inmates and their attorneys for months in the hopes of gaining information about a drug ring that was taking place inside the prison.
