Congress released a report on the surprising large number of Transportation Security Officers that are unqualified to serve in the security divisions of the U.S.’s airports.
After the Sept. 11 attacks that Aviation and Transportation Security Act was put into law thus creating the Aviation Transportation Security Administration (TSA). According to the report the TSA has greatly expanded is authority since its creation and now includes every transportation sector within the U.S.
Of the numerous people hired a large amount of these employees have been found to have criminal records and have abused their position by committing crimes. The most frequent offenses are child pornography, sexual assault, and theft.
Since 2005 the problem has only exacerbated itself when TSA administratively reclassified airport security screeners as Transportation Security Officers. Then their uniforms were upgraded to look like federal law enforcement officers, complete with metal officer badges.
The report details 50 crimes TSA employees have been arrested for since 2005 showing the serious issue in hiring practices within the TSA.
