An 11-year-old girl who was married to a 41-year-old Malaysian man in a Sharia court was returned to her native Thailand last week and is being looked after by local childcare services.
The marriage took place in June in an Islamic court in the Southern border region of Thailand. Quickly after, the marriage took social media by storm and caused massive outrage in both of the neighboring countries.
In Malaysia, child brides are among the highest in the region thanks to the fact that marrying a minor is allowed under the law in some circumstances, specifically if given permission by a Muslim court.
Recently, the husband was fined $450 for marrying the girl in Thailand without the permission of a Malaysian Sharia court.
Malaysia is currently taking steps to try and decrease the frequency of child marriages to increase its international reputation.
