“Fringe” medical options while in Thailand: Still Considered “Fringe”?

by Thailand Lawyer on December 3, 2010

If an individual is unsatisfied with their visual appearance, Thailand is not lacking in a variety of skin and surgical treatments providing a readily available, yet perhaps not fully legitimate, solution.

Take a walk down any main thoroughfares such as Sukhumvit Road, Silom or even more traditionally Thai areas of Bangkok, and you will see an abundance of skin clinics offering a variety of services. While the facial lifting, tightening, and whitening services, etc. at these establishments might not necessarily still be considered “fringe” medical practices, several locations also offer treatments using stem cells, which is still considered a controversial issue. Stem cell research and treatments is still being debated in international medical circles and the general population over ethical questions.

If you choose to receive a treatment such as this in Thailand, do your research first and if things don’t go as planned consult a personal injury lawyer in Thailand to assist you if the experience “turns pear-shaped”.

The Thailand Law Forum just published an article on stem cell research and stem cell therapy treatments in Thailand, along with other fringe medical practices in Thailand such as cloning, gender reassignment surgeries (sex-change operations), face transplant operations and cancer treatment. These practices are closely tied to the long-term goals of Thailand to become a prime international medical tourism destination.
