Bermuda the First Country to Withdraw Same-Sex Marriage Law
Bermuda’s Supreme Court had just made a ruling last year, legalizing same-sex marriage. However, Governor John Rankin has reversed this approval, saying same-sex couples may enter a registered domestic partnership which is “equivalent rights to marriage”.
LGBT activists have called on Britain’s Foreign Secretary to intervene by refusing to assent the new legislation. A member of the Labor party, Chris Bryant, has spoken out that failure to intervene would be embarrassing for the UK in the human rights field.
The legislation came about after a majority vote on a referendum pointed to opposition of same-sex marriage. Half a dozen same-sex marriages have been registered since the period of legalizing same sex marriage and repealing it. Those unions will still be recognized under the new law.
