Asian Child Rape Victims Suffer More, UK Court Rules
The UK’s Court of Appeal has ruled that Asian victims of child sex crimes suffer more than white children, and their attackers should be punished more severely, reports the Guardian.
Mr. Justice Walker said at the ruling of convicted pedophile, Jamal Muhammed Raheem Ul Nasir, that it was right for him to be sentenced to a longer jail sentence because his victims were Asian.
Ul Nasir, 32, was jailed for seven years at Leeds crown court in the North of England in December last year, over assaults on two underage girls.
He was convicted on two counts of sexual assault and four counts of sexual activity with a child.
Judge Sally Cahill QC, explained that the victims being Asian had been factored into the sentencing decision as a “aggravating feature.”
Asian victims and their families may suffer particular shame in their communities due to crimes of this nature.
Added cultural concerns such as hindering the girls’ likelihood of being considered a good match for an arranged marriage were also cited.
Ul Nasir’s lawyers argued that his sentence had been unfairly inflated.
A NSPCC spokesman said “British justice should operate on a level playing field and children need to be protected irrespective of cultural differences.”
