Former ASEAN Secretary-General has Heart Attack at 68
Former Foreign Minister, Surin Pitsuwan, played a vital role in the advancement of ASEAN interests on the world stage. He was “monumental, a statesman, educator, leader and visionary”, reports the Bangkok Post.
Local and International figures from around the world have expressed their condolences as “Surin was a valuable man in this world and his loss is very sad”. Surin, born into a Muslim family turned to a political career in 1986 and was made foreign minister in 1997.
Mr Chaiyaporn, a political science lecture at Chulalongkorn University comments that Surin was about to run for the Bangkok Governor election and had the best potential to do so with his experience in ASEAN.
