Al Qaeda Suspect Who Allegedly Targeted U.S. Embassy in Thailand Flees
The sole al-Qaeda suspect in the potential terrorist threat on the U.S. Embassy in Chiang Mai has reportedly fled to Malaysia. Police in Malaysia are preparing to apprehend the suspect.
Thailand’s prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra told reporters Tuesday that the United States Embassy in Chiang Mai was beefing up security after warnings of a possible terrorist threat.

An unnamed Thai senior intelligence official said he received information last week that al-Qaeda linked Salafists (ultra-orthodox Islamists) might be planning attacks on the U.S. consulate in the northern city.
Reports are linking the threat to the annual week and a half long joint military exercise between the U.S. and Thailand currently in progress, called Cobra Gold.
