Activists Call for Disciplinary Action Against Myanmar Police
After Myanmar police used incendiary weapons against peaceful protesters at a copper mine, activists are calling for disciplinary measures to be taken.
The police fired shells filled with white phosphorus to disperse protesters, causing severe burns on dozens of people, including monks. In the past, Burmese government officials have admitted to using teargas and smoke grenades against protesters.
The protesters have been advocating against the copper mine project, saying it “causes environmental, social and health problems.” The project is a joint venture between a Chinese mining firm and a military-owned holding firm.
