Cannabis Home Grow Approved for Thailand Community
A pilot project allowing private citizens to grow medicinal cannabis in their homes has been approved by the Thailand government. The project is limited, however, to 10 households in the Khu Muang district of Buri Ram province.
The project is overseen by the Cannhealth Institute, working under the Ministry of Public Health. According to Cannahealth Institute’s Director Dr Kitti Losuwanrak, s the pilot project will start in January if all of its proposals are approved.
The project is part of the Minsitry of Public Health’s campaign to allow citizens to grow marijuana at home for medical purpose. The project would still requires approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The 10 Buriram households involved in the project will be ie allowed to grow six cannabis plants their home gardens. Growers must use non-contaminated soil and water fand the cannabis should be free of artifical chemicals according to the Ministry of Public Health.
The Buriram pilot project is the most recent development in a trend toward lessening criminal penalties for cannabis that began at the end of 2018 when Thailand approved a law to legalize the medical use of marijuana. Nevertheless, cannabis use and possession, when not specifically prescribed by a medical provider remains a criminal offense in Thailand.
