Hot! Thai Airports Get Rid of Smoking Rooms and Smokers

Airports across Thailand have now become entirely smoke-free areas in compliance with Thailand’s Tobacco Products Control Act of 2017 (TPCA) and the Ministry of Public Health’s mandate that government agencies and state enterprises must be smoke-free.

On February 3rd, Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Hat Yai, and Mae Fah Luang removed all smoking rooms and prohibited visitors from puffing anywhere in the vicinity.

Individuals caught violating the recent smoking ban in Thailand’s airports face a fine up to 5,000 baht.

The smoking prohibition in airports is part of a larger crackdown on smoking in public areas in Thailand by authorities.

Last year, government officials also passed a ban on smoking within five meters of the entrances or exits of any public buildings, including condos, restaurants, bars, clubs, schools, hospitals, and hotels.

Thai authorities hope that the public smoking bans will cut down on the harmful effects of secondhand smoke and, in the case of airports, promote a healthy and pleasing environment for tourists visiting the Kingdom.
