Hot! Thailand Constitutional Court Protected From Criticism

A new law will be instated so that anyone who criticizes the Thai Constitutional Court will be punished with one month in jail and a 50,000 baht fine. Criticisms are allowed however, if they involve using “rude, sarcastic or threatening words” than it will be considered a punishable offense.

Before, criticisms were dealt with under the defamation law. Now, they will come under a violation of court powers, which means the court will play multiple roles within the case such as investigator, defendant and judge. A manager of a legal monitoring group says its best if the court does not use the law at all.

The new law that will consist of 31 pages will also allow the court to settle conflicts between state departments and for citizens to directly approach the court with complaints.
