Hot! Fukushima Fish Import Controversy

In 2011, Fukushima was the scene of a major nuclear and radioactive leak in Japan. Thai Authorities and officials have defended the import of fish from Fukushima, saying they have passed the “radioactive standards of the Thai Food and Drug Administration”.

The Japan Times earlier this month had said that Thailand has received the first shipment of fish from Fukushima since the nuclear accident. The Independent had also investigated, reporting back that Fukushima still had fatal levels of radiation, despite the accident occurring seven years ago.

An official from the Thai FDA, explains that Thailand reviews certificates from government agencies of the country of origin of the import product, making sure the radiation levels are low enough for consumption. A public protestor has commented online comparing “Thais to guinea pigs in labs” to test the contamination levels of the fish.
