Hot! Rohingya Girl Dies in Thailand Detention Center

A young rohingya girl who had been detained in one of Thailand’s immigration detention centers for three years has died, according to Asian Correspondent.

Zainab Bi Bi, 16, died from internal bleeding of the brain. Human rights organizations say this highlights the terrible conditions in Thailand’s detention centers, which they have deemed to be “inhumane” and “worse than prison”. Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and Foritfy Rights all stated that the conditions are so poor that they violate international laws as well as human rights.

James Gomez, Amnesty International’s Regional Director, criticized Thai authorities for detaining rohingya who flee to Thailand and denying them even basic rights. “It is shocking that Myanmar’s neighbors continue to lock up individuals seeking safety and protections after fleeing from these grave human rights violations”. “The death of this girl is another tragedy that underlines the failures of not only Myanmar, but also of its neighbors”, he added.

The Thailand Human Rights Commission is set to investigate the girl’s death and seek amendment of Thailand’s Immigration Act to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
