Hot! Foreign Mafia on Phuket Police Hit List

According to the Bangkok Post, police in Phuket are planning a series of raids to snare foreign criminals this week.

Pol Maj Gen Surachet said that law enforcement officials believe that there are several foreign criminal groups operating in the province, and that they plan to target those involved in electronic card skimmers, romance-fraud scams, private drug parties and illegal firearms possession.

“They usually commit crimes against those from the same countries such as demanding extortion money and causing trouble if no payment is made. Some Thai nationals also fall victim, he said.

As part of the campaign, the Immigration Bureau has launched an Advance Passenger Processing System (APPS) to screen tourists entering the country. Under the system, airlines will send information about the passengers to the bureau and it takes less than a minute to examine if a passenger is blacklisted.

Earlier this month, Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon called to stop mafia gangs from victimizing Thai and foreign tourists across the country.
