Hot! Panel Works to Extradite Yingluck

A committee has been set up to work towards extraditing ex-Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and bringing her to justice, Bangkok Post reports.

After being found guilty of criminal negligence for her rice subsidy scheme, she fled the country ahead of her sentencing and was given a five-year jail sentence in absentia by the Supreme Court last month.

Some media sources have reported that Yingluck is now in the UK, where she plans to seek political asylum. However, the Treaty of Extradition between Thailand and Great Britain means it could be possible to bring her back to Thailand to serve her sentence.

The head of the panel, Amnat Chotchai, who also serves as chief of the International Affairs Department at the Office of the Attorney-General (OAG), says that he will talk with experts in British law to help with the case.

According to Thailand family lawyers Chaninat & Leeds, Thailand has close relations with Western nations, with over 50 extradition treaties. Even without such a treaty, a formal request for extradition can be approved by the Thai courts under Thailand’s Extradition Act. See more information about Thai Extradition law in the video below.
