Baby from Thai Surrogacy Scandal, Gammy, Gets Australian Citizenship

Gammy, a baby with Down syndrome born via surrogacy in Thailand and allegedly abandoned by an Australian couple in August 2014, has been granted Australian citizenship, according to the Bangkok Post.
The Bangkok Post reports an immigration department spokeswoman issued a statement confirming that Gammy’s Australian citizenship application had been processed and “met all criteria for the grant,” but would not make further comment on the case.
Gammy, who turned 1 year old in December, is currently being raised by his surrogate birth mother, Pattaramon Chanbua, in Chonburi province.
Chanbua said she applied for Gammy’s AU citizenship, with the help of Australian charity Hands Across the Water, as a safeguard for his future, reports the Bangkok Post.
Chanbua confirmed Gammy’s AU citizenship grant.
