County Prosecutor Killed in Texas

Texas authorities are searching for clues to an assistant district attorney’s death in Kaufman, Texas early Thursday morning. Mark Hasse, 57, was shot by a masked gunman near the courthouse where he worked.

Investigators are searching through his cases for clues as to why he may have been targeted, and hoping to gather leads from witnesses. Kaufman Police Chief Chris Aulbaugh urged the public and media to come forward with tips.

Hasse covered a variety of cases, including organized crime.

The prosecutor’s murder is reminiscent of the disappearance of prominent Thai human rights lawyer, Somchai Neelaphaijit. Somchai was last seen being arrested by Thai police in Bangkok in 2004. His body has never been recovered.
