Florida Senate Votes To Ban Spy Drones

A Florida Senate panel unanimously voted to ban unmanned drones for surveillance purposes on Tuesday, according to the Associated Press.

The bill (SB 92), sponsored by Senate Joe Nigron (R), prohibits law enforcement agencies from using drones to gather evidence or other information to spy on citizens. It also bans government agencies from using drones for code enforcement, with an exception for terrorism-related searches or in “exigent” cases where “swift action” would be needed.

Negron said drones are currently in use in a half dozen Florida law enforcement agencies, and the bill would balance the need for security with privacy rights.
