Myanmar Military cracks down on Mine Protest; Protestors Charged by Court
Protestors at the Letpadaung copper mine were dispersed with the use of water cannons and other riot weapons by the Myanmar military forces, leaving several villagers and Buddhist monks hurt last Thursday.
The Letpadaung mine, which is located near the town of Monywa, is owned by the military and a Chinese company.
Before the military attacked the protestors, an order was issued and broadcasted on television last Tuesday night, requiring protestors to leave by midnight or they would face officially authorized action.
Several protestors state that about 1000 protestors left after hearing this ultimatum. However, many others stayed, including 100 monks, of which many of them were seriously injured or burned.
The farmers initiated the protest in June, stating that they had been forced to agree to a deal which required them to give up their land in return for new accommodation and financial compensation.
Following the protest break down, Myanmar courts charged Protest Leader Moe Thwe and seven others for the incitement against the state and protesting illegally.
The police are searching for two more activists.
Many critics fear that the democratic achievements till date could effortlessly be rolled back, as the military still attains power and influence in the newly reformed Democratic government.
