U.S. to Lift Ban on Myanmar Goods
Khaleej Times | U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Washington is to ease the ban on imports from Myanmar and lift its last major trade embargo.
The U.S. is taking the next step in normalizing its commercial relationship with Myanmar and will begin the process of easing restrictions on imports into the U.S. The move will have to be carried out in conjunction with Congress and has been hailed as a positive long term step for Myanmar.
The U.S. import ban was imposed under a 2003 act by Congress with the United States mostly importing hardwoods, gems, and garments. Now officials will have to examine each sector with Congress and decide how best to go about easing the sanctions.
